Wicklow U-18s go on a scoring spree in Wexford
Wexford 5, Wicklow 55: Wicklow U-18s kicked off their Southeast League campaign on Saturday last with a well-earned win away to Wexford.
Wicklow scored nine tries and conceded one in a game that was well contested for the first three-quarters.
Wicklow started well and after good tackling by the back row of Niall Nardy, J. Cambell and Lorcan Cullen, Wicklow gained possession and laid siege to the Wexford line but very good defending by the home team kept Wicklow out and it took a great effort to finally break through the home defence by Niall Hardy to score to first of his two tries.
From the restart John Jenkinson made one of his many forays up the centre and was well supported by K. O’Mahoney, Lorcan Cullen and Darragh Heraughty. Indeed it was Darragh Her- aughty who scored the try of the match when he burst onto a popped pass, went between the centres and then rounded the full back for a great individual try. Simon Breen converted.
Wicklow added two more tries in great succession by Niall Hardy and Simon Breen before Wexford came back strongly scoring a try and keeping Wicklow penned inside their own 22 for the last ten minutes of the first- half. Wicklow led 24-5 at halftime.
In the second-half Wicklow scored five further tries through Shaun O’Brien, Dennis Higgins, John Cambell, Seán Doyle and Garrett Kinnane and Shaun O’Brien converted two and Simon Breen one. Overall it was a satisfactory performance from Wicklow but one that was marred by an ankle injury to Darragh Heraughty shortly after the start of the second-half; a superb line out jumper and playing better than ever this year. We wish Darragh a speedy recovery. Liam Gaffney, David Acres and James Kilgannon all had solid games. Good performances by Kyle Warren, Aaron Keogh, Pádraig Naughton and Jamie Clarke when they came on augurs well for this squad going forward.
Next week Wicklow take on Enniscorthy at home in the Southeast League, kick-off 11.30 a.m.
