Promising start for under-16s
Wexford 17, Wicklow 20: Wicklow Under-16s opened their South East campaign with an exellent win away to Wexford.
With just two minutes gone Stephen King cut through the Wexford defence but was stopped just short of the line. Wicklow continued to exert pressure and in the seventh minute were awarded a penalty which Ben Porter slotted over from wide out on the left.
Wexford then awoke and scored their first try ten minutes into the match when Wicklow failed to tidy up a ball a ball on the ground. In the 15th minute Wexford scored their second try following a Wicklow line out in the Wicklow 22.
Wicklow recovered and with a minute left in the half Stephen King Scored a fine try following persistent pressure. Ben Porter converted. Ten all at halftime.
Wicklow attacked from the secondhalf kick-off, running at every opportu- nity. Wexford opted to kick deep into the Wicklow half. Kevin Wylie at fullback showed then the futility of this plan with his pinpoint kicks and his runs into the Wexford half.
Half way through the second-half Wicklow were awarded a penalty which Ben Porter in fine form put over. Twenty minutes into the half Jason Byrne robbed the Wexford full-back in the tackle and scored under the posts. Ben Porter again converted. Wexford never gave up and with just two minutes left on the clock scored and converted their third try. This was a tough opening game with both sides giving their all. The return match is eagerly awaited.
