Wex­ford 17, Wick­low 20: Wick­low Un­der-16s opened their South East cam­paign with an ex­el­lent win away to Wex­ford.

With just two min­utes gone Stephen King cut through the Wex­ford de­fence but was stopped just short of the line. Wick­low con­tin­ued to ex­ert pres­sure and in the sev­enth minute were awarded a penalty which Ben Porter slot­ted over from wide out on the left.

Wex­ford then awoke and scored their first try ten min­utes into the match when Wick­low failed to tidy up a ball a ball on the ground. In the 15th minute Wex­ford scored their sec­ond try fol­low­ing a Wick­low line out in the Wick­low 22.

Wick­low re­cov­ered and with a minute left in the half Stephen King Scored a fine try fol­low­ing per­sis­tent pres­sure. Ben Porter con­verted. Ten all at half­time.

Wick­low at­tacked from the sec­ond­half kick-off, run­ning at ev­ery op­portu- nity. Wex­ford opted to kick deep into the Wick­low half. Kevin Wylie at full­back showed then the fu­til­ity of this plan with his pin­point kicks and his runs into the Wex­ford half.

Half way through the sec­ond-half Wick­low were awarded a penalty which Ben Porter in fine form put over. Twenty min­utes into the half Ja­son Byrne robbed the Wex­ford full-back in the tackle and scored un­der the posts. Ben Porter again con­verted. Wex­ford never gave up and with just two min­utes left on the clock scored and con­verted their third try. This was a tough open­ing game with both sides giv­ing their all. The re­turn match is ea­gerly awaited.
