Baltinglass claim silverware
Baltinglass 2-9, St. Nicholas 16: This was a cracking game of football between these two west neighbours with Baltinglass winning the U-14 A football title with a six points win over St. Nicholas in the final at Arklow on Saturday.
The first-half provided a typical flavour of the match. It was end to end football all the way and at the break there was only a point in it - Balto leading by 1-4 to 1-3.
Then the match was decided in the opening two minutes of the second period as Baltinglass drilled home 1-2, with the goal scored by Eoin Patterson and the points coming from star midfielder Conor Foley.
St. Nicholas, a combo of Dunlavin and Donard players, could not pull it back no matter how hard they tried and they did put in a big effort.
Baltinglass were powered by a strong midfield with a man-of-thematch performance from Conor Foley; he was ably assisted by his partner Peadar Timmins and between them they scored 1-7 of the winners’ total.
A game St. Nicholas battled on but those scores proved to be a hill to far for them to climb.
Overall though this was an excellent game of football played in ideal conditions at Arklow with the players from both sides giving it their all.
And it was played before one of the biggest and most colourful crowds seen at an U-14 football final.
St. Nicholas reached the final by coming through from winning division two under the league system and they still have the B final to look forward to. And they can be pleased with the fact that they beat Rathnew in the quarter-final and Bray in the semi-final.
Scorers for Baltinglass were: Conor Foley (1-2), Peadar Timmins (0-5), Owen Patterson (1-10), Luke Kane and Stephen Heaslip ( 0- 1 each).
St. Nicholas scorers: Scott Phelan (1-0), Kevin Kealy (0-3), Timmy Metcalfe, Paul Murtagh and Eoin Kelly (0-1 each).
This final was for the Pat Doyle Memorial Cup with the cup being presented by the late Pat’s wife Marion to Baltinglass captain Conor Foley, who also received the manof-the-match award from its sponsor Eoin Doyle (brother of the late Pat).
