Kilbride into the last four
Kilbride 3-6; Tinahely 0- 11: Kilbride booked their place in the semifinal of the Junior C football championship with a clear-cut win over Tinahely.
JCFC The goals were the difference between two otherwise well-matched teams. Kilbride took their goaling chances which helped them to set the pace right through the game. Tinahely kept picking off the points and stayed in touch all the way but never took the lead at any stage.
Kilbride got off to a flying start with Minor star Seán Byrne pointing in the second minute and Brian Ruiz getting the first goal of the match in the fifth minute.
Seán Byrne and John O’Brien had added points before Ciarán Kenny got Tinahely’s first score in the 15th minute.
While Ciarán Kenny (2) and Luke Brennan added more points for Tinahely Dave Reddy had his first goal to leave Kilbride leading by 2-4 to 0-4 at the break.
Tinahely closed the gap to three points early in the second-half with points from Ciarán Kenny (2) and sub Micky Murray but Brian Ruiz struck for his second goal and it was all over. Tinahely won a penalty midway through the second-half. but this way a bad day for penalty takers and for the second time inside an hour we saw the chance wasted at the same goal as Ciarán Kenny saw his rasper take paint off the wrong side the wrong side of an upright.
Lively veteran Micky Murray kicked over his second point. Another great warrior ‘Buddy’ Byrne sent over another smart point while Kenny pointed two more frees but Kilbride still held on to their lead and when Michael Ruttle won a free one of their stars David Reddy had the chance to seal victory with a late point.
Both sides lost strong midfielders through injury – Seán Byrne who will be at midfield for the Blessington Minors on Sunday went off early on with a back injury whele Tinahely veteran Coleman Byrne went off with a suspected broken nose.
