Kiltegan won last SFC encounter
Kiltegan 2-7, St. Patrick’s 0-10: In their last championship meeting Kiltegan knocked out the champions St. Patrick’s in the Senior football championship quarter-final replay in Aughrim in last year.
The Wicklow town side set the early pace and led by 0-4 to 0-1 at one stage. It was John Slattery that was causing the Kiltegan defence the most trouble. He got two points in that good spell, Paul Earls, who was playing in the half forward line also had two points - one from a ‘45 while Richard Murphy also got a point. Kiltegan rallied coming up to half-time and points by Derek Daly, Seánie Furlong and Adrian Foley brought them level.
However, a point by John Slattery sent the champions in leading by 0-5 to 0-4 at half-time.
It was point for point in the early stages of the secondhalf; Seánie Furlong and Paul Earls exchanging points; Richard Murphy and John Keogh swapped another pair while Keogh and Stephen Duffy had another exchange of points.
Then a great goal by Jacko Dalton turned the game in the 45th minute. It was a great through ball by Adrian Foley to find Derek Daly on the edge of the square that made the opening.
The game was still hanging in the balance when Rory Finn picked out Seánie Furlong with a long free and the full-forward rattled the net again.
St. Pat’s threw everything they had into an all out effort to save the day. John Slattery and Stephen Duffy landed points to cut the deficit but the goal they needed never looked like coming against a good Kiltegan defence where Gavin Wynne was playing a captains part. It was not a great game but it was an exciting one and the result hung in the balance all the way.
