A TRAINEE hairdresser stole painting materials from a DIY store for a voluntary art project on which he was working.

Sean Bryan, (21), from Cois Cairn, Old Connaught Avenue, was caught trying to leave Woodies DIY, Sal- lynoggin Road, Dun Laoghaire, without paying for a paint tester, spray paint can and a Dulux matt tester, worth €12.46.

The offence was committed on July 6 last year when Bryan took the items off a shelf and place them into his bag, it emerged last week at Dun Laoghaire District Court.

The court heard that Bryan, of Cois Cairn, Old Connaught Avenue, Bray, Co Wicklow, had no previous convictions though there was a matter awaiting sentencing in the Circuit Court to which he had already pleaded guilty.

Defence lawyer Rory Staines said Bryan is a trainee hairdresser who earns € 300 per week.

The court heard that Bryan was involved in voluntary work, and he wanted the spray paint for a project on which he was working. Judge Hugh O’Donnell said that normally people pay for those items. Mr Staines said Bryan is working with the probation service and getting on very well with them.
