Pets are a real blessing

ALL CREATURES great and small formed an unusual congregation at the Holy Redeemer on the Main Street last Sunday for the annual ecumenical blessing of the animals.

The day was coordinated by the Wicklow branch of the ISPCA to celebrate Animal Awareness Week, which also included other events around the county such as walks and blessings.

As curious passers-by looked on, the crowd of cats, dogs and other household pets joined their owners outside the church for the blessing and the families that came along enjoyed the ceremony.

The majority of the animals were dogs, with all shapes and sizes attending. There were Cocker Spaniels, corgies, West Highland Terriers, Labradors, cross-breeds and more, and all were extremely well behaved on the day.

One lucky dog even managed to hitch a lift to the blessing in his owner’s shopping basket!

The menagerie of attendees were blessed on the steps outside the church and the proud owners of the animals counted themselves lucky that the day was not too wet.
