NEWTOWN UNITED FC
Good wins for our 1st’s and Youths last weekend but unfortunately no joy for our 2nd team last week.
On Saturday the youths hosted Enniskerry in the league and came out on top by 4 goals to two. Conor Eccleston set Newtown on the way with another one of his specials!
The game at times threatened to boil over at times and the visitors were reduced to ten players late in the second half. A brace of goals from Ossie Gaskin took the sting out of the opposition and when sub John Halpin powered through for the fourth goal, the points were sealed. Enniskerry did to their credit rally late on and scored two late goals but by then it was too late.
The 1st team had a great 3-2 win after extra time at home to Rock Celtic in the Leinster Junior Cup. John Heffernan scored from the penalty spot to give Newtown an early lead, but the visitors restored parity early in the second half.
With what seemed to be the final kick of the game and after exerting extreme pressure on the home team’s goal the away team scored their second goal and what seemed to be the winner. Newtown made one more foray into the opposing half and after a good run and cross from Dessie Waters, P J Dowling struck a rasper to the net to force extra time.
In the first period of extra time the all important winner arrived when a long ball out of defence found Dessie Waters who outpaced the Rock centre half to slot home. The second period saw chances for both teams but Newtown won out to advance to the next round.
Bad day at the coalface for our second team who were beaten 8-2 away to league leaders St. Peters. Their goals came from Anthony Duffy and Terry Murphy.

Only three teams from the club saw action last weekend and we recorded 2 wins and one defeat. The Under 9’s grabbed a 1- nil win at home to Wolfe Tone to keep their perfect home record going. A goal from Michael Coghlan sealed the three points in a good team display.
If you wanted goals, then Rathdrum was the place to be as our 10’s travelled to take on Avonmore and where the score finished 7-5 to the Newtown team. Missing 5 players due to injury and illness Newtown found themselves 5-3 down with 10 minutes remaining but they stormed into the lead for the first time in the match with 4 late goals.
Scorers were Dillon Carthy with 4, and singles for Hollie Murphy, Sophie Gallagher & Ryan Clarke. Another team struggling with injuries are the 16’s and it showed as they went down 5-0 at home to Greystones. Players who starred were, Jamie Shortt & Stephen Moran.
