Motocross event in Rathdrum
THIS WEEKEND, Saturday and Sunday, will see the third round of the National Grasstrack championship come to Co. Wicklow.
The South East Motocross Club previously ran this event in Aughrim from 20002002 and in Roundwood in 2006. This year the small town of Rathdrum will host the prestigious series in which riders compete on motocross racing machines.
Grasstrack racing, however, is somewhat different to the more common motocross racing. The tracks competitors race on are flat tracks, without jumps, which makes for very fast racing.
Wicklow has a history of producing top motocross and grasstrack talent. In years gone by the county has produced several Premier national champions, in particular since 2003 when the top award has been shared between two Rathdrum natives, Patrick O’Neill and Mervyn Griffin.
Unfortunately, O’Neill suffered an horrific injury earlier this season and will not be competing this weekend, but you can rest assured Griffin will be out to prove he’s still number one.
Looking towards the youth classes, 13-yearold James Doyle will definitely be one to keep an eye on. The Annacurra youngster has been consistently getting his 85cc Honda up front this season, so few would bet against him in front of his home fans this weekend.
There will be a full programme of racing on both days which will include adult and youth classes. Adult classes will cater for Premier, Semi-Expert and Sup- port riders.
In the youth classes your age decides which class you race in, with machine sizes ranging from 50cc to 250cc. Riders can actually begin racing at the very young age of six years old, albeit on small automatic 50cc machines, but they still give it their all and provide serious entertainment.
Racing will start at 2 p.m. on Saturday and 12 noon on Sunday. Admission is only €5, with children under 12 getting in free. For more information about the event and the track location, check out www.semcc.ie.
