Gorey 26, Arklow 13: Arklow started well in the floodlit game on Friday evening, but after just five minutes conceded a soft try from the base of an Arklow scrum when they turned over possession to Gorey from about 30 meters out.
Gorey had the support players and crossed the line near the corner flag this try was unconverted.
Arklow went to the attack and due to a number of knock-ons by Gorey and good forward play Arklow, Arklow were camped in the Gorey end of the field and pressed the try line time and again.
After winning good ball in the Gorey 22, Arklow started to ruck and maul towards the try line and crossed the line to score a great forward try similar to recent matches. The conversion was well kicked.
The scoreline did not flatter Arklow who con- tinued to press and were awarded a penalty which was converted from a difficult angle.
Half time came with Arklow doing well all over the pitch the score was reflective of the game. Arklow 10 points Gorey 5 points.
The second half started with Arklow holding Gorey away from the danger areas and looked to be in control.
Then the professionalism of the Gorey side showed through when they went the length of the pitch moving the ball from side to side until they ran in the try.
Now Gorey were in the ascendant and the ran at Arklow from all over the field. The speed of the Gorey midfield was too much for Arklow to handle and another try was conceded after 32 minutes of the second half which was converted.
The future looked bleak, but Arklow were not giving up without a fight and scored a love- ly drop goal after Arklow had pressed Gorey’s 22. The score now looked healthier for Arklow and a bonus point was a possibility.
For the final five minutes Arklow had Gorey on their try line for a series of rucks and mauls which looked like they might get a score. However, the referee awarded Gorey a penalty from their own try line, and as fortune favours the brave, they ran the ball the length of the field with Ark low’s desperately tackling defenders trying to catch the runners.
But the speed of the Gorey backs and their support was just too much for a retreating Arklow team.
