SOCCER ACADEMY GIRLS LIFT DUBLIN DISTRICT CUP WITH STELLA MARIS
THERE WAS great success for the young soccer stars of County Wicklow recently.
Five young ladies from the Wicklow Ladies Soccer Academy were all part of the Stella Maris U-16 Dublin District Ladies Cup winning team.
This competition is open to all teams in Leinster and in the final the girls defeated Kells from County Meath 3-1.
Sarah Miley, Deirdre Mulligan, Vanessa Keeley, Celena O’Toole and Niamh Kearney all featured on the winning team on a proud day for Wicklow.
Girls can only play in the Wicklow Schoolboy/Girls league up to the age of 13 and after that must go elsewhere to pursue their passion.
To address this situation, the Wicklow Ladies Academy was set up by Tony Poutch a few years back and it attracts great young stars every Monday night between 8-9.15 pm to Finn Park in Kilcoole.
The academy is affiliated to the FAI and is run by Tony, the popular and well known Hughie Nolan and the “Silver Fox” Dave McGuirk All are qualified coaches.
Due to Tony’s long association with Stella Maris, that famous club from Richmond Road who have produced many Internationals over the years at both boys and girls junior levels.
A lot of the girls are reccomended by Tony and Stella are only to happy to sign the girls knowing Tony’s reputation for producing top stars. Aine O’Gorman, Susan Hackett, Stephanie Roache and Emily Hanney have all repersented Ireland at International level and came through the academy over the years highlighting the amount of quality the county has at junior girls level.
Also, just to show that the future is bright, Stella Maris also won the U-14 cup final on the same day, again featuring five girls from the ladies academy. Maebdh Deeney, Laura O’Neill, Carissa O’Toole, Aisling Hayden and Emily Jennings all starred in the 9-0 victory over Cambridge Girls.
That makes it a total of ten young Wicklow ladies coming home from Peamount on Sunday with a Leinster medal in their pocket. Keep up the good work Tony, Hughie and Dave.
