Kiltegan make no mistake in replay
Kiltegan 1-10; Ballinacor 1-6: Replays seldom follow the same pattern as the drawn game but for a long time it looked like this one would
A lighting start which saw full forward Darren Hobson score 1-1 inside five minutes sent Kiltegan on their way to victory over Ballinacor in the replay of the Junior A Championship Semi-final at Baltinglass on Saturday.
That start gave the Carlow border side the cushion they needed to soak up a lot of pressure and go in just two points down – 1-4 to 1-2 – at half time after playing against a strong enough wind.
Ger Byrne got the first point for Ballinacor in the tenth minute while their goal did not come until the 30th minute.
Manager Kevin Byrne pulled a master stroke midway through the first half when he pulled David Carter and Liam Byrne from the bench at the same time. The lively Carter made an instant impact and was causing extra trouble for the Kiltegan defence.
After Keith Furlong had pointed a free for Kiltegan before Conor Parsons pulled one back for Ballinacor. Sub David Carter kicked over a point and then had a hand in the goal which saw Ronan Phelan give Ger Byrne he final pass in a defence splitting move.
Carter added another point to leave it 1-4 to 1-2 in favour of Ballinacor at half time.
With the wind behind then it was always going to be only a matter of time before Kiltegan pulled away.
Points by Keith Furlong and Adrian Keogh brought Kiltegan level within five minutes of the restart.
A great battle over the next ten minutes saw Kiltegan take the lead twice only to be hauled back each time. A point by Keith Furlong brought a quick reply from the other sub Liam Byrne who was making his strength tell. Stephen Farrell pointed a free but Carter kicked over his third point
However that was Ballinacor’s last point and it came in the 47th minute. Adrian Keogh, Christy O’Toole, Keith Furlong and Blaine Harmon kicked over points to see the Carlow border club through to the final against Newcastle.
Man of the match had to be Adrian Keogh but Kiltegan can really thank a great defence where again Jim Bob Dalton was outstanding.
