N11 motorway plans ‘crazy’
COUNCIL URGED TO LODGE OBJECTION
PROPOSALS to upgrade sections of the N11 to motorway status have been described as ‘crazy’ and the NRA have been accused of ‘putting the cart before the horse.’
Stretches of the N11 north of the Cullenmore Bends, Arklow Bypass and Gorey Bypass are all under consideration for speed limit changes. The move comes despite the fact that a section of the dual carriageway still hasn’t been completed, including blackspots like by The Tap and Ballinameesda Bends
The decision will be made by the NRA but, speaking at last week’s Wicklow Town Council meeting, Cllr. Conal Kavanagh said the Council should lodge their own submission outlining reasons why the local authority would be opposed to the changes.
‘It’s ridiculous to say go faster at 120 but then slow down to 80 in a very short space of time while coming into an area where a great deal of accidents have occurred, some of them ending in loss of life. There are already major road safety concerns on stretches of that road. It’s a crazy idea.’
Cllr. Fachtna Whittle also slammed the proposal at the last town council meeting and feels there is no way it should go ahead while the section of the N11 from Rathnew to Arklow still remains uncompleted.
‘The NRA are putting the cart before the horse and need to upgrade that stretch of the road first.’
Not everyone agreed that the section of the N11, between the Beehive and The Tap in particular, is a dangerous part of the road.
Cllr. Ollie Lalor said, ‘the problem at the Beehive is bad driving. If people just curtailed their speed there wouldn’t be a problem. They are flying.’
