Mother of surprises
BRAY NATIVE Mary Kelly was left speechless as she entered Greystones Golf Club last Saturday to what she thought was a birthday bash for her son, but what turned out to be a surprise party for her too.
Mary was celebrating her 65th birthday while her son Gary was celebrating his 40th birthday.
‘I would never have guessed in a million years!’ was Mary’s response as the guests shouted ‘Surprise’ when she walked in the room.
An extra surprise for the birthday girl was the arrival of another of her son John, who is now living in London, but who flew over for the party.
Mary was also joined by her two brothers Jackie and his wife Anne and Tommy and his wife Irene.
Unfortunately her son Patrick couldn’t make it over for the surprise but Mary was joined by the rest of her kids, Derek, Bernard, Stewart, Jack, Paul and Cep.
All the surprises on the night weren’t left just to Mary.
The birthday boy and huge Leeds United Fan, Gary, was presented with a birthday card signed by all the Leeds United Players and a certificate wishing him a happy birthday signed by the manager of the club Gary McAllister.
Joining in the celebrations with Gary were his three children Karl, Rachel and Cian and his lovely wife Anne-Marie.
There was also a strong contingent from Bray Lakers at the party.
Mary’s son Derek not only has the title of Bray Person of the Year but is also a member of the Bray Lakers where Mary is very involved and is a member of the committee.
As the two birthday cakes were brought out and the guests sang happy birthday, a bottle of champagne was cracked open.
Mary and Anne-Marie were then presented with bouquets of flowers. A great night night was had by everybody and the celebrations continued in Mary’s house until the early hours of the morning.
Mary and Gary Kelly have joint birthday celebrations.
