WICKLOW IS back to its full quota of three primary care teams following Friday’s launch at the Wicklow Primary Care Centre, Glenside Road, Wicklow town.

Mary Harney, TD Minister for Health and Children, officially launched the Wicklow Primary Care Team, commenting that ‘this will provide easier access and better healthcare outcomes to the local community and will work as a building block for further development in the area.’

Earlier in the year the HSE came in for some criticism after it was revealed that only one primary care nurse was covering the whole county. There were mean’t to be three nurses providing a service, but one was off on sick leave and the other on maternity leave.

The responsibility of the primary care teams will be to cover Wicklow town and surrounding environs, spreading out right up to Roundwood and Dunganstown.

The three teams launched on Friday will serve a population of 20,877 and consist of health professionals responsible for organising and delivering primary health care to families in need of support.

Each team is made up of nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapist, home support services, and participating general practitioners. Other services will also be provided like speech and language therapy, a counseller/therapist and community welfare service and clinical psychology.

During the launch Minister Harney also said, ‘there has been a huge amount of work invested in this initiative by all of the professionals on the team and by all the local health office staff. I wish to acknowledge the endeavour and foresight of the HSE staff and local GP’s in paving the way forward for other teams both locally and nationally.’

The three teams are part of 530 to be established all over Ireland during the next three years. The HSE also funds x-rays and ultrasounds from the Arklow Primary Care Centre.
