Great games as rac­quet­ball sea­son gets un­der way

THE 2008/2009 Rac­quet­ball sea­son be­gan this year with a Fun Dou­bles com­pe­ti­tion for men, women and ju­niors in the Ark­low Sports and Leisure cen­tre.

This friendly com­pe­ti­tion pairs the club’s open play­ers with lower grade play­ers to play off in a round robin for­mat. The op­pos­ing open play­ers play the first game, the part­ners play the sec­ond game and the third game is a game of dou­bles.

There was a great at­mos­phere on the day, with some great matches be­ing played. The over­all win­ners in the Mens’ event were Brian Byrne and Paddy Dodd, and the run­ners up were Adam Neary and Daniel Smale. In the Ladies’ event Anita Byrne and Rachel Byrne won and Lauren Breen and Orla Byrne were sec­ond. A great day was had by with the Ark­low club pro­vid­ing re­fresh­ments for play­ers and spec­ta­tors through­out the day.

Ju­nior coach­ing is back on ev­ery Satur­day from 10 30 am til 1 pm. Club ju­niors re­mem­ber to bring your rac­quets, gloves and pro­tec­tive eye-guards. Any new ju­niors ( min­i­mum age of 8) want­ing to join our ju­nior squad and take part in coach­ing ev­ery Satur­day can come along and use the club equip­ment.

A fundrais­ing ta­ble quiz for the Ark­low Rac­quet­ball Club will be held in The Old Ship on Thurs­day, Oc­to­ber 16 at 8.30pm. It costs ¤20 per ta­ble of four and there will be prizes for first and sec­ond place. A raf­fle will also be held on the night with plenty of prizes.

The All-Ire­land Team Club Cham­pi­onships will be held in Kingscourt, Ca­van on Novem­ber 15 and 16. There are sev­eral di­vi­sions in this com­pe­ti­tion, Novice, In­ter­me­di­ate and Open for both Men and Women, and ju­nior di­vi­sions for boys and girls. Any­one in­ter­ested in rep­re­sent­ing the Ark­low club at this event can put there names on the en­try poster in the Sports Cen­tre.

The Ark­low club won both the Men’s and Women’s Open events last year, and were sec­ond in the In­ter­me­di­ate and hope to do even bet­ter this year.
