Wick­low show true grit but are nar­rowly pipped by Gorey

Wick­low 10, Gorey 12: Wick­low Un­der-16’s opened their Le­in­ster League cam­paign with a dis­ap­point­ing de­feat to Gorey.

Wick­low be­gan the game at a re­mark­able pace and three min­utes into the game Gorey were awarded a scrum five me­tres from their line. The Wick­low for­wards put on a great shove and forced the er­ror.

Mark Hig­gins was on hand to pick up and drive over the line. Wick­low spent the next fif­teen min­utes in the Gorey 22 but des­per­ate de­fence kept Wick­low out.Gorey then came more into the game and were re­warded for their hard ef­fort with a try on the stroke of half time. One minute into the sec­ond half and some poor tackling from Wick­low al­lowed Gorey score un­der the posts which they con­verted.

Wick­low again put on the pres­sure and were awarded a penalty un­der the posts.

They opted for the scrum but failed to score. With ten min­utes left Wick­low in­tro- duced An­drew Con­way whose straight run­ning had an im­me­di­ate ef­fect on the game, set­ting up Stephen King to score wide on the right.

Wick­low and Gorey had chances to kill off the game but it fin­ished Wick­low 10 Gorey 12. Wick­low travel to Car­low next Satur­day.
