Wicklow show true grit but are narrowly pipped by Gorey
Wicklow 10, Gorey 12: Wicklow Under-16’s opened their Leinster League campaign with a disappointing defeat to Gorey.
Wicklow began the game at a remarkable pace and three minutes into the game Gorey were awarded a scrum five metres from their line. The Wicklow forwards put on a great shove and forced the error.
Mark Higgins was on hand to pick up and drive over the line. Wicklow spent the next fifteen minutes in the Gorey 22 but desperate defence kept Wicklow out.Gorey then came more into the game and were rewarded for their hard effort with a try on the stroke of half time. One minute into the second half and some poor tackling from Wicklow allowed Gorey score under the posts which they converted.
Wicklow again put on the pressure and were awarded a penalty under the posts.
They opted for the scrum but failed to score. With ten minutes left Wicklow intro- duced Andrew Conway whose straight running had an immediate effect on the game, setting up Stephen King to score wide on the right.
Wicklow and Gorey had chances to kill off the game but it finished Wicklow 10 Gorey 12. Wicklow travel to Carlow next Saturday.
