Rathdrum lose out to Ashbourne
Rathdrum Development 6, Ashbourne 2nd 14: Rathdrum’s Development Team played the Ashbourne 2nd team in Rathdrum on Sunday.
However, the day started off unfavourably for the Rathdrum side when two of their key players were caught in traffic on the way to the game, which resulted in Rathdrum having to play the first 20 mins with 13 men. This did not deter the home side who ten minutes into the game received the opportunity to get three points ahead off the boot of Anto Byrne for an Ashbourne infringement. Both sides slogged it out for the first half and defence held strong for the home side and visitors alike as the experienced Ashbourne squad attacked through their heavier pack whilst the nimble Rathdrum backs probed from all areas. Half time showed a scoreboard of six all from penalties awarded to both sides.
At the start of the second half the home side were again reduced to 13 men as two of its players spent time in the sin bin for infringements at ruck.
Finally the visitors got into the Rathdrum half and were gifted a penalty, which put them three points ahead. Rathdrum went on the offensive once again but could not break the solid defence put up by Ashbourne and in the dying minutes of the game, the visitors sealed their 14-6 victory with a well worked unconverted try.
