Wicklow Town knock local rivals out of cup
Wicklow Rovers 1, Wicklow Town A 2: It was Town and not Rovers who emerged victorious in this Wicklow derby with a place in the third round of the FAI Junior Cup at stake.
Wicklow Rovers old ghosts came back to haunt them as Town’s scorers were part of the team that got to the Wicklow Cup final last year.
BA Franey got his first ever Town goal and former Bray Wanderers man Maurice Dunne scored a penalty to send their side through while Jim Foley netted for the hosts. Spa United 2, St. Anthony’s A 1: Spa United proved just a little bit too hot for St. Anthony’s last Sunday as the Kilcoole side exited the FAI Junior Cup. Martin Williams netted for the visitors but it proved it wasn’t enough and it is Spa United who march on. Forth Rangers 2, Glenview FC 3: Glenview put their faltering start to the league behind them to advance to the third round of the FAI Junior Cup. The Bray side faced a difficult trip to Forth Rangers but did Wicklow proud by returning home with a 3- 2 victory. They found themselves 1-0 down but fought back, they went 2-1 down and again fought back before in the 93rd minute sealed a dramatic win against the Kilkenny side. Glenview’s goals came courtesy of Jack Douglas, Mark Mahon and Justin Melia. Evergreen FC 6, Newtown United A 0: Newtown United were always going to be up against it as they came up against one of the strongest sides in the competition and there was to be no fairytale for the Wicklow team.
