An Tochar romp to victory over Tinahely
JUNIOR ‘B’ FOOTBALL An Tochar 0-12, Tinahely 0-6: An Tochar booked their place in the final of the Junior ‘B’ Football Championship at the second time of asking when they romped to a doubles scores victory over Tinahely at Annacurra on Friday night.
Two weeks ago Tinahely came from behind to force a draw but on this occasion the Roundwood men closed the game out when their opponents tried to repeat their comeback bid.
Wing-forward Shay Cullen was again the inspirational player for An Tochar; his accuracy was phenomenal as his nine points from play and frees amply testify; and he got their show on the road inside two minutes with their opening point.
Full-forward Fergal Mulligan was the provider of the pass to Cullen and he acted as a conduit throughout the match for Roundwood attacks, though he lacked a sharp edge to his own shooting on the night.
Played in a drizzly rain throughout, Tinahely’s shooting for scores was in keeping with the dismal weather and they squandered a lot of chances throughout the first half as they fell 02 to 0-5 behind to the accuracy of Shay Cullen who accounted for four of An Tochar’s five points in the opening half.
Although Shay Cullen stretched the An Tochar lead immediately after the restart, Tinahely looked as if they were again going to stage a recovery in the third quarter.
Centre-forward Nicky Murphy was Tinahely’s outstanding player, aided and abetted by Gavin Kenny and Tony Lacey, and mainly through his efforts Murphy steered his team to within two points of An Tochar by the end of the third quarter 0-6 to 0-8.
But that’s as good as it got for the South district team in this rematch.
Indeed in the final quarter they were reduced to 14 players as the Roundwood side pressed on for their comfortable victory, with Shay Cullen again the architect and executioner for most of their points.
