Sad death of Fine Gael and GAA great

FOR­MER Wick­low foot­balling great, long-time Fine Gael party mem­ber and ex-coun­cil­lor Pas­cal Deer­ing has died. Pas­cal, passed away yes­ter­day (Tues­day). He was in his 70s.

He be­longed to the well known Deer­ing fam­ily of Dunlavin and was the son of Mark Deer­ing, a Fine Gael TD and for­mer Ir­ish rugby in­ter­na­tional.

Pas­cal was an ac­com­plished foot­ball player, and rep­re­sented Wick­low at in­ter-county level on many oc­ca­sions. He was also an elected mem­ber of Wick­low County Coun­cil.

In a trib­ute to his friend, Deputy Billy Tim­mins said, ‘it was with great re­gret I heard of his pass­ing. Over the last few weeks we knew he was gravely ill.

‘My sym­pa­thies are with his loving wife and ever-present com­pan­ion Una, his son Mark, daugh­ter Una and all the Deer­ing and Mahon fam­i­lies.

‘Pas­cal was a quin­tes­sen­tial Wick­low man and had a great love of all sports.

He was an avid golfer and a foot­ball great for Wick­low. Every­one who knew him re­garded him with deep af­fec­tion and their lives will be that much sad­der from his pass­ing.’
