Chess team scores im­pres­sive victory

BRAY-GREY­STONES Chess Club had a spec­tac­u­lar 5- 3 victory over reign­ing Ir­ish Cham­pi­ons Phib­s­boro last Mon­day.

The key mo­ment came when Bray player Colm Daly de­feated his fel­low Ir­ish In­ter­na­tional Stephen Brady.

This was a great win for Daly as it was the first league match Brady had lost in five sea­sons.

On Sun­day Oc­to­ber 12 the Es­planade Ho­tel played host to two youth tour­na­ments where Bray were again vic­to­ri­ous.

In the un­der 12 sec­tion Bray player Leo Kurevlov took first place ahead of East Coast un­der 12 Cham­pion Peter Cooke, with John Fo­ley from Boot­er­stown in 3rd.

In the un­der 18 sec­tion Loreto Col­lege woman Aoife Led­widge O’Brien of Bray emerged cham­pion ahead of for­mer Ire­land un­der 16 In­ter­na­tional Kyle Stokes of Grey­stones and Bren­dan Teck­len­borg of Dun Laoghaire in 3rd place.

The youth sec­tion is de­lighted to an­nounce the Grey­stones Chess Academy is now sold out, but youth en­quiries can still be made to stephen­js­tokes@ya­hoo.com.

The Grey­stones Chess Academy Head Coach Stephen Stokes has also been ap­pointed man­ager of the Le­in­ster un­der 19’s for the com­ing sea­son.

The Wick­low Secondary Schools Chess Cham­pi­onships will take place on Wed­nes­day Oc­to­ber 29 in the Bray-Grey­stones Chess Club.

With nu­mer­ous cash prizes on of­fer the com­pe­ti­tion is ex­pected to be fiercely con­tested.

Mean­while Bray will host the 2009 Le­in­ster Ju­nior Chess Cham­pi­onships in early Jan­uary.
