Arklow under-14s 10, New Ross 10: Arklow under-14s made heavy work of this South East League match.

Dominating the game through out they should have won but for bad decision making combined with bad tackling and poor handling. Conversely New Ross tackled superbly which kept Arklow at bay.

From the kick-off Arklow were on top and on three occasions had an overlap of three to one but each time Arklow took the wrong option. New Ross were finally in the Arklow half of the pitch and were rewarded with a try after some slack tackling allowed the left winger to score in the corner. At halftime the score was New Ross 5 points, Arklow nil points.

Arklow made four changes at half-time and this paid dividends straight away from the kick-off. Pressure by the Arklow forwards forced a knock on by New Ross in their 22 and from the resulting scrum a darting run by Michael O Scannaill to score in the corner. Jamie Roe was short with the conversion.

Arklow were still in control but a loose pass and a missed tackle with the New Ross winger broke free and squeezed in the corner. Ten points to five for New Ross and time running out Arklow won a line out in the Ross 22 and a great determined drive for the line yielded a great try for Philip Utunas. Jamie Roe was again short with the conversion.

In the end Arklow were happy with their draw. It was a game Arklow could have won, but on too many occasions they failed to do the simple things right and that’s what wins close matches,
