Bray reach Billy Byrne Cup final
Bray Emmets 3-7, Avondale 0-9: A three-goal blitz by Bray Emmets in the closing minutes of their Billy Byrne Cup game against Avondale at Arklow qualified them for a final meeting with Arklow Rock Parnells in this secondary Senior hurling competition.
With just three minutes left on the clock, it looked as if Avondale were going to hold on for victory, leading their opponents by 0-9 to 0-7 at that stage.
Avondale had retired at half-time on level terms with Bray at 0-4 each and resumed for the second-half with a better performance than their opponents.
Michael O’Toole fired over two terrific points from sideline balls and top scorer Niall Heffernan converted three frees into points, something that is a speciality of his.
Just when things were starting to look good for ‘The Dales’, opponents Bray showed once again that a game is never over until the fat lady sings.
Defender Lorcan Pratt, who came back as an attacker in the closing stages after having been substituted earlier, rifled home two goals and Liam Kenny added a third for Bray Emmets to give them a late, late win (3-7 to 0-9).
