Wick­low’s Hickey in Ir­ish squad

IR­ISH SE­NIOR light­weight box­ing cham­pion Ross Hickey has been named in the Ir­ish Am­a­teur Box­ing As­so­ci­a­tion nine-man squad for next month’s Euro­pean Se­nior Cham­pi­onships in Liver­pool.

BOX­ING The Grange­con man and the rest of the squad will trav­elled to Sh­effield yes­ter­day (Tues­day) for a train­ing camp with hosts Eng­land, France, and Swe­den, be­fore head­ing to Liver­pool for the start of the tour­na­ment on 5 Novem­ber.

Rus­sia dom­i­nated the last Euro­pean Se­nior Cham­pi­onships in Bul­garia, winning a phe­nom­e­nal nine gold and two sil­ver medals from eleven weight cat­e­gories.

Ire­land have won 33 medals ( five gold) at Euro­pean Se­nior Cham­pi­onships level since 1939.
