Rath­new 4- 8, An Tochar 1-4: From pil­lar to post there was no doubt­ing that Rath­new were go­ing to be the win­ners of this Mi­nor foot­ball B Shield fi­nal played in glo­ri­ous au­tumn sun­shine at New­cas­tle on Mon­day.

Rath­new dom­i­nated pro­ceed­ings from the start and they were ahead by 2-4 to 0-1 at half-time.

Their de­fence mar­shalled by John Man­ley, Sam O’Con­nor and cap­tain and cen­tre-back Seán Jame­son had a firm grip on the game all the way through.

At mid­field, the dom­i­nance of Jody Mer­ri­gan and Stu­art Mur­phy en­sured that the Rath­new for­wards got plenty of qual­ity ball which they used quite well.

Scor­ers for Rath­new were: Timmy Dono­van (2-2), Philip Mur­phy (1- 4), Jody Mer­ri­gan (1-1), Ed­ward Doyle (0-1).

For bat­tling An Tochar: Bren­dan Kennedy ( 1- 2), Stu­art Meaney ( 0- 1), and James Mol­loy (0-1).

Af­ter the game Pat Mitchell had the hon­our of pre­sent­ing the Shield to his own club’s Seán Jame­son, while the Peo­ple News­pa­pers man of the match award was pre­sented to Stu­art Mur­phy by Ed­die Leonard.
