Ladies’ football league finals on at weekend
WICKLOW SENIOR LEAGUE FINAL
Blessington v. Bray Emmets (Roundwood, Sunday, 4 p.m.): At the Roundwood venue this Sunday two of the titans of the modern game in Wicklow go head to head for the honour of Senior League Champions for 2008. This match will feature many of the Wicklow ladies county team which won Leinster honours this year. Blessington, backboned by their three in a row championship team, will arguably start as favourites but will have to battle hard if they are to overcome this Bray side with a fine sprinkling of young talent. Bray on the other hand have unfinished business as they are still smarting from their inexplicable championship loss to Arklow.
However, despite the amount of new players it will be possibly the more experienced players who will decide the direction of the trophy sponsored by Dominic Leech. Blessington with Emer Miley, Julie Fitzmaurice, the Reid sisters (Maura and Breda), and the evergreen Jill Heatley will pressure the Eastern outfit led by Eadaoine Lenihan, Aishling O hAnnaidh, Mikaela Shelley and Niamh Coleman.
It is probably the Bray attack against the Blessington defence which will be the difference between the sides as the Bray girls when they cut loose are irresistible. However, the miserly Blessington defence will not yield easily and a draw in this match is a distinct possibility.
WICKLOW INTERMEDIATE FINAL
Baltinglass v. Eire Og (Laragh, Sunday, 2 pm.): This match promises to be one of the matches of the year. Baltinglass, still smarting from their defeat by Eire Og in the championship final earlier this year, will be all out for revenge and Eire Og will want to prove that their victory, which they thoroughly deserved on the day, was no once off.
Both management have been preparing for this showdown but perhaps Eire Og who have only recently exited from the Leinster Championship have the better quality preparation as they have had fine quality matches in recent weeks.
However if Baltinglass can get Anne Marie Doran, Edel Patterson and Geraldine Norton, (who had a strangely subdued championship decider) into this game then the Westerners will certainly be more than a match for the seasiders. Eire Og who have among their ranks the likes of Caoilfhionn Deeney, Laurie Ahern and Lorna Fusciardi will take some beating and are given a tentative vote to deny Damien Patterson’s girls in a tight match which will go to the wire.
