MEMBERS of the Special Olympics riding club at Festine Lente have been competing recently, with two competitions in as many weeks - one for children and one for adults.

To make it even more special for the competitors, family members came along to cheer them on as they took part in the riding challenges.

There were 13 adults taking part in the adult section, while 12 children competed the week before that. Some of the members of the club are regular attendees at Festine Lente while others go to Sunbeam House.

They all ride at least once a week, and thoroughly enjoy the chance to put their skills into practice while at the same time they are preparing for the 2012 Special Olympics.

‘They are judged on how they turn out both themselves and their horses as well as their equestrian skills,’ said a member of staff.

Winners included Jonathan Kilpatrick in the intermediate section and Liz Mair in advanced. The Special Olympics competitors are organised by staff members Clodagh Carey, Zoe Dixon and Ann Condron.
