Suspected ‘arsonist’ operating in Bray as second business premises targeted
FIREMEN suspect that an arsonist is deliberately causing damage around Bray, after they attended a second fire behind a business premises in the town last week.
Anvil was the second store to be targeted in the space of a week, said a source within the fire service, in what he is sure was a malicious incident. He said that pallets were set alight using paper in a lane behind the shop. They received a call to the fire in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The Bray crew had attended a similar incident the previous weekend behind Dunnes Stores on the Quinnsborough Road at around 3 in the morning.
‘It’s very possible the two fires could be connected,’ said the fireman. ‘Our first thought was that there was a possible arsonist trying to cause damage around Bray. It has happened in the town before.’
He said that the two incidents looked extremely similar, and were both in laneways behind the shops. He recalled a series of fires in Bray a number of years ago, when seven were set in the space of one night.
It was impossible to tell at that stage if an accelerent had been used, he said. Gardaí have said that both incidents are being investigated.
They added that while there was no damage to the properties, they would like any witnesses to contact Bray Garda Station on (01) 6665300.
