ARKLOW Town Council staff came to the swift rescue of a number of unfortunate birds on Monday morning which had got trapped in the frozen Boating Lake.

A call was received in the early hours reporting the creatures which had become stuck in the solid mass of ice as it froze over following the most severe cold snap to hit Arklow in years.

The employees quickly attended the scene where they proceeded to free the swans, ducks and geese with hammers.

Due to the icy conditions it wasn’t long before the lake froze again prompting a call to Wildlife rangers to remove the at-risk birds until the frost cleared.

Council workers free swans, geese and ducks from the frozen pond waters after they got stuck in the town’s frozen boating lake.
