Brazilian jailed for staying too long

Bray People - - News -

A BRAZILIAN MAN who stayed in Ireland after his visa had expired was given a jail term at Bray District Court this week.

Jose De Silva with an address at Merry Meeting Farm, Rathnew, appeared before the court on charges of failing to produce a valid passport, failure to register and for remaining in the state after the expiry date of permission.

Judge Connellan said the court’s hands were tied as it was obvious because De Silva wasn’t working he wouldn’t pay a fine and he had already broken a court order by remaining in the country so it would not be suitable to bind him to the peace.

‘The only option open to the court is a term of imprisonment,’ said Judge Connellan.

De Silva was sentenced to three months in jail.
