Better chance of ‘meeting Santa’ than being told exact debt levels

Bray People - - News -

‘YOU HAVE a better chance of meeting Santa’ was the response Cllr. Nicky Kelly offer his colleague Cllr. Christopher Fox when he requested exact details of Wicklow County Council debt levels.

The independent councillor sought the information following a request by council management for members to approve a €20,000,000 overdraft to cover the coming year.

Senior official Michael Nicholson informed members that an overdraft of € 22,000,000 was approved this year but to carry it through to 2009 members must pass a motion.

A total of €2,000,000 was ring-fenced at that time to cover Disabled Persons Grants, and although the grants have been honoured by the council, the overdraft has not come through.

‘I have been reading about how local authorities are funded and this must come to a head. Can the information be provided at the December 22 meeting?’ asked Cllr. Fox.
