CLOSE TO 100 footballers from North Wicklow took part in a six-a-side ‘Africa Shield’ tournament at Greystones Astro Soccer Pitches in Charlesland last Saturday, while a similar number of golfers competed in a ‘Nearest the Pin’ contest hosted by Glen of the Downs Golf Club the previous week.

The six-a-side blitz provided an afternoon of sporting excitement at the Greystones Recreational Centre, with a keenly contested tournament eventually being won by a local ‘Kindlestown Kickers’ team led by Willie O’Hagan.

The ‘Nearest the Pin’ competition at Glen of the Downs Golf Club was won the previous week by Pat Kelly, who went away with the prize of a night’s accommodation at the local Glenview Hotel.

The competitions and events are set to continue this week also, with upwards of 50 participants expected to take part in an aqua aerobics ‘Aquathon’ to be hosted by Bray’s Shoreline Sports and Leisure Centre on Tuesday.
