SPEAKING at a local authority conference on climate change, Environment Minister John Gormley accused former Renault Ireland boss Bill Cullen of blaming him for the drop in car sales. ‘It is not the case, and it is wrong. Most people in the SIMI would say the reduction in car sales is due to the fact people have less money. It is as sim ple as that.’ THE SIMI has asked dealerships to direct their staff to capture the details of UK-registered vehicles driven by Irish residents so they can be passed on to the Garda and Revenue officials. The Society believes the Revenue is not enforcing its regulations, and that this allows motorists driving an imported vehicle to avoid paying their VRT and road tax. TRANSPORT Minister Noel Dempsey will shortly announce details of the new Electric Transport Programme, to help Ireland meet EU targets on carbon emissions. A major shift to electric vehicles would require changes to the electricity grid system, with the installation of charging points across the country, plus chargers at parking meters and in homes.
