Triathlon club members take to the hills

Bray People - - Bray Sport -

Members of Wicklow Triathlon Club, as part of their Winter training schedule, took to the Hills of Ballyhoura in Co. Limerick last weekend.

In previous years they had to travel to Wales and Scotland to avail of proper mountain biking trails and facilities. This year however, saw the opening of Ireland’s very own Mountain Bike specific courses, in Ballyhoura, Co. Limerick, Derroura, Co. Galway, and our own local Ballinastoe in Co.Wicklow.

These courses are custom built for mountain bikes, and often run on a one way system to avoid accidents through collisions. They are also kept separate to any hiking tracks therefore further reducing the chance of accidents.

Triathletes are encouraged to use mountain biking as a form of keeping fit during the winter season, while increasing their bike handling skills and most importantly, having some fun.

The two courses completed by the club last weekend were;

Garrane Loop - The Garrane Loop ventures westwards from Waypoint 3 taking in some long and fast singletrack descents as well as some long and demanding climbs on forest roads, tracks and singletrack trails. Length: 35 Km.

Castlepook Loop - This is the ultimate loop of the Ballyhoura trails, being the longest and most demanding. It goes right to the southern fringes of the forest and presents you with the biggest climbs and most rewarding descents. Length: 51 Km.
