Wicklow trio on Irish team
THREE WICKLOW based athletes have been named on the Athletics Ireland team that will be taking part in the European Cross Country Championships in Brussels on December 14.
The Wicklow contingent is headed by Sli Cualann’s Fionnuala Britton from Brittas Bay and his is joined by clubmates Deirdre Byrne, Arklow, and Tara Jameson, who is a promising and up and coming young athlete.
It seems that Fionnuala Britton has recovery sufficiently from the stress factor in her foot that kept her out of last week’s national intercounties cross country championships and which put her European participation in some doubt.
Pending a fitness test before the Europeans, DCU student Fionnuala will lead the senior women’s team and she will be aiming for a podium position having placed seventh in the European’s last year.
Arklow’s Deirdre Byrne is also running with the senior women’s team and can be relied on to give it her all and put in a strong performance. Deidre narrowly missed out on qualifying for the Beijing Olympics earlier this summer.
Promising Tara Jameson is competing for the junior women and will also be hoping for a strong performance to further her athletic career.
Irish team manager Anne Keenan Buckley said ‘we have good strength and depth across all the teams for this year’s Europeans and I think we can look forward to some impressive performances and the possibility of medals’.
