Great win for Drummettes
RATHDRUM WOMEN’S rugby team played host to visiting Blackrock in frozen conditions on Sunday in their second round of the Leinster League.
These teams met previously in September when Blackrock comprehensively won 31-5, so Rathdrum knew they would have to up their performance for this match.
Rathdrum won the kick-off and from the opening moments, Blackrock put the home side under immense pressure when they made four passes getting the ball out wide to their winger who ran through three defenders to score under the posts. After stern words, Rathdrum restarted with determination and began to pile the pressure on the visitors, pinning them in their own half for most of the first period but without gaining any points, just before half-time, Blackrock again scored a breakaway try against the run of play to leave the score 14 -0 at the break.
Rathdrum knew that they were capable of better and again upped the tempo in the second-half. Ground conditions were a factor in the home side’s reserved play of the first-half and caution was thrown to the wind for the second-half as Rathdrum’s defence became impenetrable and they attacked from all areas. Rathdrum’s captain Sue Brady set the standard for the home side when she burst through four defenders and sprinted for the line hotly pursued by a disarrayed defence to put the home side on the scoreboard with five points.
Having a taste for success, Rathdrum again put pressure on the visitors and after 20 minutes of hotly contested play, Rathdrum were awarded a scrum in the visitors 22.
Rathdrum’s AJ McQuarrie picked from the base and burst through the defence on the blind side to put Rathdrum within four points of the visitors.
The home side’s gander was up and they hotly chased a home win. With Blackrock still on the back foot and as the clock ticked down to the final whistle, Rathdrum made their final play from a ruck within Blackrock’s 22, when blindside winger Ciara Healy screamed for the pass that put her across the visitors line to finish the score at 15-14 to Rathdrum.
Rathdrum’s women’s rugby team have a rest this week and then face UCD away on December 14th.
