St. Nicholas prove too strong for brave Blessington
St. Nicholas 5-8, Blessington 2-8: The Dunlavin/Donard combination St. Nicholas completed a great double at Blessington on Saturday but got it a lot harder to win the U-12 League final. Despite the fact that they had most of their Allen Cup team on duty and should have proved too strong for Blessington they still had to fight to the end. SOUTH-WEST U-12 FINAL The first-half of this game was very even with St. Nick’s, who were just pipped by St. Pat’s in extra-time in the county final a week ago, just edging in front by 2-2 to 0-7 at half-time.
Then two quick goals on the restart put them in the comfort zone and left Blessington with a mountain to climb.
The young blues fought back however, grabbed a goal of their own, added two good points and the game was wide open again.
However, the goals had killed off any chance the home side had of getting back into the game for a second time. When full-back Eoin Murtagh, who had moved up field grabbed another goal it was all over
The extra skill of players like Eoin Murtagh, Garry Allen and Conor O’Sullivan told in the end.
Subs like Des Mann, who scored 1-1 and Stephen Dowling also left an imprint on the game.
Blessington also had a lot of promising players, none better than the O’Connor brothers Patrick and Michael who was their top scorer.
Five sets of brothers – the Murtaghs; the Kellys; the O’Sullivans, the Healys and the Figgis’s, and a brother and sister, the Byrnes were involved with St. Nicholas in this great double.
