Kiltegan chase more silverware
Kiltegan 2-17, AGB 1-4: Champions Kiltegan are still chasing more silverware at the backend of the season and this was evident in their league game against AGB at Arklow on Saturday, writes Mark Kennedy.
SFL DIVISION 1 A win would give them a top four place in Division 1 and keep them on course to add the Dunne Cup to the championship title they won in October.
In contrast AGB were going through the motions of completing their league programme, having achieved their lowly objective the previous week against An Tochar - that of staving off league relegation.
Against that backdrop, Kiltegan were the more focussed of the two teams and, despite fielding just half of their championship side, they were still far superior to their opponents even though they were only operating at half throttle.
AGB’s long-serving servant James Furlong, operating at corner-forward, fired the opening shot of the match with a point for the seasiders, but Kiltegan quickly took control to race into a 0-9 to 0-1 lead after 25 minutes with a string of points from influential John Keogh at full-forward, Michael Foley, Anthony Furlong, Blaine Harmon and Adrian Foley.
Still corner-back Alan Byrne, centre-back Pat Egan were performing well for AGB and stand-in goalie Philip Gleeson made a number of fine saves, though he was inclined to engage in indulgent passing of the ball around his own goal instead of clearing his lines fast and effectively.
Gleeson’s over-elaboration eventually caught up with him when, as we suspected might happen, he was dispossessed when off his goal line and Anthony Furlong was left with a simple tap to an empty net.
Minutes later centre-forward Adrian Foley drilled a powerful shot inside the right hand post for goal number two and this game was effectively over as a contest by halftime with Kiltegan leading by 2-10 to 0-2. Kiltegan did find it hard to motivate themselves in the second-half though they did stretch their lead with further points from Adrian Foley, Rory Finn and Anthony Furlong before AGB hit a purple patch that brought a punched goal from midfielder Ciarán Hyland who got on the end of a long ball from Furlong and two points from their best forward Niall Mullett.
But Kiltegan again finished the stronger with a brace of points from Seánie Furlong and singles from Anthony Furlong and Adrian Foley to emphasise their clear cut win.
