THE PORK MEAT scare which has spread throughout the country this week has impacted in many areas. However, at a Shillelagh meat packing facility efforts have been made to ensure that no jobs will be lost if at all possible.

In the region of 800 employees at the Kerry Foods plant have been on tenterhooks in recent days as they have continued to man the workplace by gathering recalled meat products and sourcing clear pork to process.

According to Director of Corporate Affairs for Kerry Group, Frank Hayes, the main aim of the company is to access stock which staff can work on.

‘ So far we have maintained employment at the Shillelagh plant and our aim is to get some clear stock back into production by the end of this week. At present discussions are ongoing regarding this so we are awaiting development to see when we can commence work again.’

‘We are doing our best in difficult circumstances and to date the scare hasn’t impacted on staff levels,’ added Mr. Hayes.
