A NUMBER of councillors expressed hearty congratulations to boxing champ Katie Taylor at last week’s Council meeting at Bray Town Hall.

Katie returned from China on Tuesday morning, where she retained her world lightweight title.

‘Katie has a massive potential to win a gold medal for Ireland in the Olympics,’ said Cllr. John Brady, who said it is hoped women’s boxing will be included in the 2012 London games.

‘She is a great sports woman,’ said John Byrne, while Cllr. John McManus also congratulated her, but remarked that the national media had not covered her success to as great an extent as it deserved.

‘She is the most successful sports person of her generation in Ireland,’ he said.

‘I want to be associated with Katie too,’ said Cllr. Anne Egan who returned after an illness, to a warm welcome from her colleagues.

‘I am delighted to be back,’ she said. ‘Even if it is only for a few months.’
