Gladys gets surprise on 87th birthday

GLADYS SHEEHAN got a pleasant surprise last Thursday evening, when her friends in the Square One Theatre group threw a party in the Strand Hotel to celebrate her 87th birthday.

The glamourous Gladys, who is a much-loved and respected member of the community, never got so many compliments in her life, she said. ‘I have a swelled head now!’ she remarked gleefully.

It was the Cuala Road woman who directed Square One’s first three productions - On Trial, Saibh and Tolka Row. The group has been thriving ever since, and has retained close ties with its inaugural director.

They presented the birthday girl with a beautiful bouquet of roses, and all of the talented guests performed a party piece. Gladys herself charmed her audience with an extract from ‘Moll,’ a funny sermon all about the dangers of close dancing and bad thoughts!

After appearing on stage and screen for over four decades, Gladys still teaches drama to children in a purpose-built studio in her back garden, and loves her work as much today as she ever did. ‘I love every minute of it,’ said the characteristically energetic and positive woman, who said she is as fond of the teenagers as the little ones.

As well as teaching, she has starred alongside actors from Pierce Brosnan and Gabriel Byrne to Richard Burton and Sean Connery, and has stolen the show in programmes on television such as classic Glenroe.
