Heather hosts evening in aid of orphanage
LAST THURSDAY EVENING over 30 Greystones locals descended on the home of Greystones woman, Heather Finney, for a fundraising evening.
The coffee and music evening was a tremendous success with € 400 being raised for the Nicoresti Orphanage in Romania.
Heather alongside her friend Trish Carrig held the event as way of showing their support for another Greystones lady, Marion Smith, who since 1998 has raised money for the orphanage.
Marion first volunteered in 1998 for four months in Nicoresti Orphanage.
During her time there she was witness to the terrible conditions children with disability were exposed to such as no running water, broken windows and soiled mattresses.
As volunteer, Marion, fundraises each Christmas and travels over to Romania so that long term volunteers can come home for Christmas.
Andy and Marion Smith run therapeutic music sessions with the young adults and bring colourful percussion instruments.
‘ We have learned songs in Romanian and have lots of fun making music. Most of these young people cannot talk, and music is an international language, a great way to communicate with them. We also take over the running of one of the homes, housing 16 young adults, cleaning, cooking, caring so that the Romanian staff can be home with their families and to cut costs,’ explained Marion.
The money raised on Thursday night will be used to buy the extras for each young adult at this time of year such as treats, food and Santa.
