Clinical Dodd volley sees Arklow collect silverware
Arklow Town A 1, Greystones United A 0: A clash of the U-10 titans at Arklow’s Leisure Centre on Sunday last as Arklow Town A welcomed Greystones United A knowing three points would be good enough to secure the league title.
U-10 PREMIER A freezing cold morning at the seaside venue, Town began in red-hot form, putting Greystones on the back foot with waves of attacking play.
Neil Murphy and Morgan Harris were very industrious in the Arklow engine room dictating the flow of the game.
Some excellent work up the right flank, initial- ly a pass from defender Darragh Fitzgerald, saw Conor Dodd in space and heading for the opposition area. Cutting inside he squared a pass to Ross Hanley but Hanley’s effort was well marshalled by the ‘Stones keeper.
Town then gained the upper hand with a terrific strike in the ninth minute. Liam Scales, working the left flank, cut inside his marker and Conor Dodd sweetly met his cross from the edge of the box on the volley to smash it high into the Greystones net.
The hosts kept up the pressure in the early stages of the secondhalf but a second goal just wouldn’t come, a number of chances spurned.
Greystones, disciplined throughout, sensed a route back into the match and were it not for the battling qualities of both Neil Murphy and Mikey Quigley they may well have snatched a leveller. The Town duo defended heroically as Greystones pushed forward.
Lady luck shone on the Arklow side in the closing minutes as Greystones almost found a way through but with Town keeper Cathal Kelleher cutting down the angle, the Greystones attacker sliced his effort wide and with that chance spurned the league title was won by the Arklow side.
