Town knock Mount Merrion out of cup
SOCCER ROUND-UP OF ALL THE LOCAL ACTION
Arklow Town 2, Mount Merrion 0: A highly fancied Leinster Senior League Senior Division side Mount Merrion more than met their match when travelling on Friday night last to Bridgewater Centre Park, to face LSL Division 1 side Arklow Town in a FAI Intermediate Cup contest, knowing that the winners advance ever closer to inclusion in next season’s FAI Cup proper.
FAI INTERMEDIATE CUP Town on the other hand were keen to bounce back after two successive defeats and indeed the hosts started brightly, creating a number of half chances in the opening quarter, with Stephen Hurley closest to breaking the deadlock, his effort rebounding off the crossbar.
However, Town did indeed strike first after a scramble in the six yard box saw Willie Doyle push the loose ball home, giving Town a deserved lead.
Doyle went close to adding a second with half-time approaching, receiving a deftly flicked pass from the composed Hurley and then driving his effort narrowly wide with the ’keeper beaten.
Arklow pressed for a second goal as frustration appeared to be getting the better of their Senior Division opponents and again the woodwork was to deny the Arklow side a merited second goal.
With time running out for Mount Merrion the home side struck a decisive blow, with Doyle again netting after good work from the industrious Ian O’Reilly. Without doubt Town’s best performance of the season and a place now secured in the last sixteen of the FAI Intermediate Cup.
