Celebrating 125 years of the G.A.A.
2009 SEES the 125th anniversary of the founding of the Gaelic Athletic Association.
At many levels there will be special events to mark this milestone. Here in the Garden County, Cumann na mBunscol, in association with the County Board, will be holding a competition with an academic flavour to reflect the educational context of the influence of the GAA in our schools.
Pupils will be invited to write an essay, design a poster, create a poem or do a project, the theme of which is “Celebrating 125 Years of the GAA”.
There will be further details about this competition early in the new year, but now that we have the “closed season” it might be time to start planning for this event. Entries will be accepted from pupils or groups of pupils who are attending primary school in the Garden County. It was also decided to rename the GAA/INTO Mini Sevens Céiliuradh 125.
Once again Wicklow will be hosting the regional festival in football. The sub committee to review the selection procedure for the Mini sevens will meet on 13th January.
CUMANN NA MBUNSCOL NÁISIÚNTA 125 CELEBRATIONS
Cumann na mBunscol Náisiúnta intends to mark this historic year by publishing a small book entitled From Cumann na mBunscol to Páirc an Chrócaigh and Beyond. The idea behind this publication is to commemorate sportspeople who played in Cumann na mBunscol competitions and later went on to represent their county in Croke Park or their country further afield.
Each county is requested to send a small piece (300 words approximately) along with a photograph of when the person was in primary school and later as an adult. Counties are reminded that there are various disciplines: football, hurling, camogie, handball, rounders and athletics.
It is hoped to have a good balance between male and female sports stars, so counties are requested to send in at least two résumés, one male and one female. An Coiste Náisiúnta hopes to have this publication ready in time for INTO Congress in April 2009 so urgency is of the essence.
A list of counties and who they have chosen will be put up on www. scoilsport. org. Submissions should be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org .
COOL TO BE IN SCHOOL DAY 24TH APRIL
Throughout 2009 there will be numerous events nationwide to celebrate the 125th anniversary.
Croke Park has designated Friday 24th April as Cool to be in School Day.
Schools are requested to allow children to wear their favourite GAA gear to school on that day and to designate it as a GAA Sport for All Day with GAA related activities for all pupils.
