Under-12 indoor hurling tournament gets under way
HOT ON the heels of the Under-10s, The Tom Ryan Indoor Hurling Tournament for Under-12s, organised by St. Patrick’s GAA Club, which is now in its seventh year, commenced on Saturday at the Arklow Sports Centre.
The Under-12 tournament is again very well supported this year, with eight different clubs participating.
Each team completed three rounds of games on the first day, with all games being very well contested. Barndarrig and Michael Dwyers have hit the ground running, with full points after the first round of games. Glenealy are the top of the chasing group, having dropped only two points.
In the featured game, Barndarrig faced up to Arklow Rocks and it proved to be a humdinger, indeed. It was very close in the early stages, with no quarter taken or given. The very impressive Katie Bouchier finally broke the deadlock and opened the scoring, pouncing on a rebound after the goalkeeper made a great save.
Arklow Rocks defended heroically after this setback, but the pressure finally told and Anthony Quinn added another goal for Barndarrig.
Katie Bouchier struck again shortly afterwards with a great strike from distance. But the Arklow lads didn’t lie down and pulled one back when Jack Furlong struck a great goal. Barndarrig held out for a win however, on a scoreline of 3-1.
As well as the goal scorers, Barndarrig had great performers in Andrew Peter Gilsenan-Kavanagh, and Michael Crowley. Cormac O’Shea, Ciaran O’Shea, Shane Mellon and Jason Roche had good games for the Arklow team.
