Fionnuala loses her battle against injury
Britton will miss European Cross Country championships
WICKLOW’S FIONNUALA Britton has lost her battle against injury and will miss this weekend’s European Cross Country Championships in Brussels.
It had been hoped that she would recover from the foot injury which forced her to withdraw from the recent National Inter-Counties cross country championships in Tramore, but unfortunately the European event came too soon for the twotime Irish champion.
Britton would have been one of Ireland’s best medal hopes, having taken silver in the U-23 race in the Europeans two years ago and seventh in the senior race in Spain last year.
She then represented Ireland in the Olympics in Beijing in the 3,000 metres steeplechase where she ran a creditable race in her heat even though it was not good enough to make the finals.
One of her major targets next years will be the European cross country which is being held in Dublin and she would dearly like to mount the winner’s rostrum on home soil.
‘The rest of her year in 2009 is being built around the Europeans,’ said her trainer Pat Diskin recently.
She will also be looking towards the 2012 Olympics in London which will be her ultimate aim.
This latest setback will come as a bitter blow to Britton, who recently won the Cross Country/Road Athlete of the Year award.
