NEWTOWN UNITED FC
Only the 1st team were in action last weekend as they travelled to take on Wicklow Town in the first round of the Wicklow Cup.
Against a fellow favourite for the cup put in an excellent performance to come away with a 2-0 victory. Dessie Waters and Dean Odlum scored the all important goals in an all round good team display.
The league now closes for the Christmas break and will resume on Sunday 11th January 2009.
The club are holding a 50/50 draw on the 26th December in the Mount Kennedy Inn (music on the night by The Scene).
All at Newtown United would like to wish Leon McKenna (son of 1st team player Noel) a speedy recovery from his recent operation.
Three of our teams were in action last weekend and we recorded 2 wins and 1 defeat from these games.
The 8A’s won yet again thanks to a 2- 1 victory at home to Ardmore Rovers. The goalscorers were Jack Gallagher and Craig McCabe and Joseph McDonald deserves the plaudits for his performance in goal.
The Under 10’s lost at home 4-2 to Greystones and were chasing the game from virtually the first minute when their opponents scored. Greystones added a second goal just before the break to give them breathing space as the home side were playing quite well and it was only their final ball which was letting them down. Dillon Carthy reduced the arrears with a cracking shot from an acute angle early in the second half.
They say your at your most vulnerable just after you score and this was clearly the case as the visitors restored their two goal cushion soon after. Newtown scored again, this time from the penalty spot as Ryan Clarke smashed the spot kick to the net. In the very last minute Greystones scored again to seal the points. Best for Newtown were Ryan Taylor and Ryan Clarke.
Our Under 11’s produced their best display of the season so far after a 2-nil away win over table toppers Greystones thanks to goals from Jordan Synnott and Dillon Carthy. It would be unfair to pick out individuals on the day as all 14 players who played all excelled on the day.
Without doubt it was performance of the week and hopefully this will be the result that turns their season around. Nice to see two ex-juniors get on the score sheet across the water, namely Paul McShane who scored his first goal in Hull City colours away to Liverpool at Anfield and Paul Heffernan whose goal gave Doncaster Rovers the lead at Selhurst Park away to Crystal Palace.
Congratulations once again to Katie Taylor who was named AIBA boxer of the year this week and was presented with her award in Moscow.
