Aughrim-Annacurra have goal-den touch
Aughrim/ Annacurra 7-7, Stratford/Grangecon 3-4: Aughrim/ Annacurra ended the juvenile year on a high note when they won the Teacher’s Cup in Dunlavin on Sunday.
This is the oldest cup for juvenile football in the West and this is the first time it has gone outside the old district.
This year the West District Board extended its boundaries to take in part of South Wicklow under a new title of the South/West Board and ran off their usual competitions in football.
No hurling played however.
Aughrim/ Annacurra are the first club in the south to win a cup at this level west of the hills.
It was a very even firsthalf; Peter Quigley gave the AA’s the lead; but Alan Norton had three points on the trot to put Stratford/ Grange in front
Jack O’Sullivan, a mighty midfielder, levelled the game again but then Miriam Sleator and Alan Norton linked up in a passing movement which saw Norton get another point.
Peter Quigley and Seán Byrne exchanged goals but then two goals in quick succession put the south boys in the driving seat.
The west boys hit back again; Alan Norton powered his way through for a goal and Douglas Hanbidge had a point that might have been a goal to leave only two points between the sides at half-time – Aughrim/Annacurra 3-3; Stratford/Grangecon 24.
Aughrim/ Annacurra got well on top in the second-half with Jack O’Sullivan, Pat Phelan, Martin Doyle and Peter Quigley adding goals.
Douglas Hanbidge got one back for Stratford/Grangecon but it was not enough to keep them in the hunt.
Brendan Nolan may have got player of the match but he was not far in front of full-back Conor Lambert who had a great second-half for a s t r o n g Aughrim/ Annacurra team.
Alan Norton was the Stratford/ Grangecon star with Matt Hanbidge, Matt Manley, PJ McGrath, the two brave girls Lucy Cush and Miriam Sleator, Seán Byrne and Christopher Hanbidge also doing well.
Jimmy Birchall, the Chairman of the South/West Board presented the cup to the Aughrim/ Annacurra captain Peter Quigley and congratulated both teams on a great sporting game.
The player of the match trophy was presented to the Aughrim/ Annacurra entre half-back Nolan.
